How do you become a PA?

If you’re looking for a good salary and great perks, becoming a PA is an excellent career move. Good PAs are in high demand, and the beauty of the role is there’s work in a number of industries including finance, media, legal and medical.

The downside is getting your foot in the door in the first place which can be very frustrating. Recruitment agencies rarely consider candidates unless they have experience. But it’s a catch 22 - how do you get that experience in the first place?

If you’re already working in an admin support role, or you have limited PA experience, the first thing you should do is review your CV. It’s tempting to include all your work experience, particularly if you are in the early stages of your career. But most recruitment agencies and potential employers are only interested in what you’ve done that’s relevant to the job they are hiring into.

If you’re thinking about a career change, or simply not getting interviews because you don’t have experience, consider training to get some formal qualifications under your belt. You’ll be showing commitment to future employers, and proving you have the skills required. The Institute of Legal Secretaries and PAs or Pitman Training are good places to start.

Milk your contacts – it’s how many people find jobs and move up the ladder. Ask friends, family or business associates you trust if they know anyone you could contact for work.

And finally, many people get their lucky break by contacting employers directly rather than going through an agency.
