Office Angels and office jargon

January 29th, 2008

Miss Violet Miss Violet

According to a recent BBC article, recruitment consultant Office Angels has collected the most embarrassing, politically correct and annoying workplace jargon that is currently being used in the office.

Current buzz words appear to be:

  • blamestorming” – debating with colleagues as to whose fault something is
  • boss-spasming” – which is suddenly looking busy when you boss appears
  • bottoming it out” - ?

Are there any buzz words going around your office?
Let us know as PAs, secretaries, and office managers must be getting their share of jargon. Remember to use your “blue sky thinking…”

Local gym chains

Living a healthier lifestyle ranks high in most people’s New Year resolution lists especially if you are a PA or secretary that is stuck in a very stuffy office. Starting a new exercise routine now could see you emerging sylph-like and revitalised by the Spring.

To help you take the first step, we’ve compiled a list of some of the UK’s top gyms. Check all websites for current offers – most gyms give incentives for new members and also check to see if your employer has negotiated corporate rates for a local gym.

Fitness First (FitnessFirst.co.uk)

If you’re looking for a no-frills gym where you won’t feel intimidated, Fitness First the largest chain in the UK, is worth a look. Their no-nonsense approach is backed up with the latest gym equipment. They also run a variety of fitness classes.

There are two women only gyms (Fitness First for Women) in north London, located in Chalk Farm and Crouch End, as well as in several locations across the country.

David Lloyd Leisure (DavidLloyd.co.uk)

What sets David Lloyd Leisure apart from the rest is their focus on racquet sports. All clubs offer tennis, badminton and squash with qualified coaches available if you want to learn properly.

Plugging themselves as a bit more upmarket, you’ll also find excellent gym equipment, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and a range of exercise classes. Other facilities include health and beauty spas, crèches and nurseries, sports shops and club lounges for refreshments.

LA Fitness (LAFitness.co.uk)

Marketing themselves to the younger crowd, LA Fitness offers the latest gym equipment, in addition to indoor swimming pools in some of their clubs and fitness classes. When you need to wind down, head to the sauna and then relax in the on-site cafes and restaurants

Virgin Active (VirginActive.co.uk)

In 2006, Virgin Active bought the successful Holmes Place chain, and poured £20 million into refurbishing its gyms. They now offer the latest fitness equipment, a number of specialist exercise areas, and women-only zones.

Offering a fun environment in which to work-out, other facilities include swimming pools, and spas with Jacuzzi, sauna, steam rooms, and relaxation lounges. Beauty and health therapies are available, and the family-friendly Kids Club-V caters for babies from 6 weeks to teenagers up to 15 years.

Living Well (LivingWell.com)

The Living Well chain of gyms is based in Hilton hotels across the country. Some of the gyms are quite small so check before you go. But if you like the idea of indulging yourself in the hotel spa, offering beauty and health treatments as well as swimming pool, sauna and steam room, then this chain could be the one for you.

Harbour club gym, Chelsea (harbourclubchelsea.com)

If you’re after something exclusive, then the Harbour Club Gym in Chelsea is worth a look.

It’s more akin to the country clubs of yesteryear than an inner city gym. The Harbour Club offers state of the art equipment, 13 tennis courts (indoor and outdoor), and pilates and spinning studios.

There are two swimming pools - the midnight blue 25m lane pool and the 14m waterfall pool complete with waterfall and hydrotherapy beach. Socialise or network in the restaurant or bar, and indulge in a treatment at the Total Health Clinic.

Top 5 ways to avoid the flu

January 9th, 2008

Miss Scarlet Miss Scarlet

It’s that time of year again. Your work colleagues are ill, strange viruses are going around and there is always someone coughing and sneezing. Here are some helpful tips to avoid the flu and other bugs so you can fully enjoy the new year.

Eat well

Eat a variety of fresh foods to increase the vitamin and mineral content of your diet, essential for boosting the immune system. Include foods of different colours such as green leafy veg (broccoli, watercress), and orange or red fruit and vegetables (mango, butternut squash). Cut back on sugar as it suppresses the immune system, and swap processed foods for complex carbs such as brown rice.

Supplements

Take a multi-vit to make sure you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs. It’s important to combine this with a healthy diet. Boost your vitamin C intake to help ward off colds and flu, and consider taking the herbs Echinacea or Goldenseal, as both can boost the body’s immune system.

Sleep and relaxation

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep – without it your body will struggle to fight infection. If you can’t get 8 hours every night, try to have a couple of early nights in the week to balance late nights at the weekend.

Exercise

Exercise is important for the lymphatic system which carries toxins out of the body. Do 30-60 minutes of gentle to moderate exercise every day such as brisk walking, working out, running, swimming or yoga. It gives your immune system an extra boost, and helps to keep stress at bay – a major cause of illness.

Keep warm

Layering is big this season so there’s no excuse not to dress to stay warm. Protect your neck and chest from the wind, wear a hat (50-55% of the body’s heat is lost through the head) and keep your feet warm and dry.
