How do you become a PA?

If you’re looking for a good salary and great perks, becoming a PA is an excellent career move. Good PAs are in high demand, and the beauty of the role is there’s work in a number of industries including finance, media, legal and medical.

The downside is getting your foot in the door in the first place which can be very frustrating. Recruitment agencies rarely consider candidates unless they have experience. But it’s a catch 22 - how do you get that experience in the first place?

If you’re already working in an admin support role, or you have limited PA experience, the first thing you should do is review your CV. It’s tempting to include all your work experience, particularly if you are in the early stages of your career. But most recruitment agencies and potential employers are only interested in what you’ve done that’s relevant to the job they are hiring into.

If you’re thinking about a career change, or simply not getting interviews because you don’t have experience, consider training to get some formal qualifications under your belt. You’ll be showing commitment to future employers, and proving you have the skills required. The Institute of Legal Secretaries and PAs or Pitman Training are good places to start.

Milk your contacts – it’s how many people find jobs and move up the ladder. Ask friends, family or business associates you trust if they know anyone you could contact for work.

And finally, many people get their lucky break by contacting employers directly rather than going through an agency.

How do you become a legal secretary?

Have you thought about a change in career or the opportunity to increase your salary?

Legal Secretaries are in huge demand at the moment for their specialist support and can earn anywhere between £22k - £40k depending on location and experience.

But what exactly do they do?

  • they liaise with clients
  • attend court with solicitors
  • prepare court documents and statements
  • give administrative support to solicitors
  • set up meetings with clients

Where would you work?

  • in a solicitors office
  • in a government department or public sector body
  • in the legal department of a large company

Skills I would need?

  • be computer literate
  • able to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • be discreet
  • have an interest in law
  • have good attention to detail

Do I need qualifications?

You don’t necessarily need legal secretarial qualifications as some employers will train you on the job. However obtaining legal secretarial qualifications can help you greatly in landing the job you want and increasing your basic salary.

The Institute of Legal Secretaries and PAs offers a comprehensive diploma for legal secretaries along with individual subject courses. The diploma covers many subjects such as legal terminology, the legal system, and civil litigation and can be an invaluable qualification for landing a legal secretarial position.

Pitman Training also offers a Legal Secretarial Diploma that covers the law, IT skills, audio transcription, and teeline shorthand.

What organisations can PAs join?

Do you ever feel you’re not taken seriously at work? Do you struggle to stand up and feel proud of what you do? Joining a professional organisation could give you the boost you need. And if this sounds like something your mum would do, think again.

Over the last 20 years, the lot of an office professional has changed beyond recognition, and with it has come the drive to treat the occupation professionally. There are lots of associations clamouring for your membership, so do your research before signing up.

Consider what benefits you’ll get from joining. Does the association offer information or training to its members, and at what cost? What kind of networking opportunities are there – meeting with people in the same situation as you can bring a breath of fresh air to your working life. Other things worth considering include how ethical they are, and if the rest of the industry takes them seriously.
